Skills & Tools to Build a Better Life in Liberia...
Ten Points for Liberian Parents to Build Skills in Teenagers (Ages 13–18)
As Liberian children grow into teenagers, they face important years for learning, confidence, and responsibility. Parents, even those who cannot read or write, can still guide their teens to build real-life skills for success.
1. Encourage Responsibility:
Let teenagers take charge of small duties—washing clothes, cooking, caring for younger siblings, or helping on the farm. Responsibility teaches discipline.
2. Teach Money Sense:
Give small amounts to manage and teach saving. Encourage them to plan how to use or keep money wisely.
3. Support Practical Skills:
Help them learn trades such as carpentry, mechanics, farming, tailoring, or hairdressing. These skills create future independence.
4. Use Phones for Learning:
Show them how smartphones can teach—through YouTube, OneLiberia.ai, or other free learning tools. Encourage educational use, not only entertainment.
5. Build Communication Skills:
Talk often with your teen. Listen when they speak. Encourage polite and confident conversation with elders and friends.
6. Encourage Reading and Writing:
Even if you cannot read, ask them to read signs, messages, or Bible verses aloud. Reading grows knowledge and sharp thinking.
7. Support School or Apprenticeship:
Remind them that education or skill training is the path to a better life. Help them stay focused, even when times are hard.
8. Teach Respect and Teamwork:
Encourage good manners, honesty, and cooperation. These social skills help them work well with others in any job.
9. Build Confidence and Hope:
Praise their efforts. Celebrate small successes. A confident teen believes in their future.
10. Guide Career Dreams:
Talk about what they enjoy doing—fixing things, growing crops, helping people—and discuss how to turn that into work or business.
Teenagers need direction, not pressure. When parents offer steady support and moral example, their sons and daughters will grow into capable, hardworking young adults ready to build Liberia’s future.
