Children Ages 7-12

Ten Points for Liberian Parents to Build Skills in Children (Ages 7–12)

Children between ages 7 and 12 are growing fast in mind and body. These are the years when they begin to understand responsibility, teamwork, and problem-solving. Even if parents cannot read or write, they can still guide their children to build strong skills for life and work.

1. Encourage Reading and Listening. Ask older children to read aloud from schoolbooks, signs, or Bible verses. Listen and discuss the meaning together.

2. Teach Counting and Simple Math. Use market examples—counting coins, measuring rice, or dividing fruits—to teach numbers in real life.

3. Practice Hand Skills. Let them help with simple repairs, sweeping, washing, cooking, or farming. These tasks teach care and discipline.

4. Build Responsibility. Give daily duties such as feeding chickens, fetching water, or cleaning their study area. Reward effort, not just results.

5. Encourage Teamwork. Let siblings or friends work together on chores, games, or school projects. Team spirit is key for future work.

6. Teach Honesty and Respect. Speak truthfully, keep promises, and correct lies gently. Respect for others builds trust in the community.

7. Talk About Dreams and Goals. Ask what they want to become—teacher, farmer, mechanic, nurse—and help them imagine the steps needed.

8. Teach Problem-Solving. When something breaks or goes wrong, discuss how to fix it instead of shouting. This builds calm and creative thinking.

9. Encourage Reading of Proverbs and Stories. Liberian stories and proverbs teach wisdom, patience, and kindness. Use them to guide good behavior.

10. Use Technology Wisely. If you have a smartphone, let children use educational apps, watch learning videos, or listen to the OneLiberia Family Podcast—always under supervision.

Between 7 and 12, children begin to see how their skills connect to the real world. Every parent—whether educated or not—can shape a child’s habits, confidence, and purpose through daily practice and encouragement. Learning at this age should be active, hopeful, and full of love for work and knowledge.

Summary:

Parents can build strong skills in children ages 7–12 by encouraging reading, counting, honesty, teamwork, problem-solving, and responsibility through daily activities and love—even if they cannot read or write.
